Servicing IBM System x Servers Part II
his course concentrates on problem determination and the tools that can be utilized to trouble shoot IBM System x Servers. Before you start the practical exercises, however, we will discuss some of the key technologies used in IBM System x servers.
The lab exercises revolve around best practice in dealing with IBM System x server problems. This combination remote lab and paper exercises will enable you to become familiar with the high end of the System x server range and how to perform service on them.
You will also see some of the fault tolerant and redundant features of the servers and practice working with servers that have suffered a component failure but which are still running the NOS.

Key practical exit skills include being able to:
- Identify the physical components of the IBM System x servers covered here and how to work with them using the support documentation
- Use the features of multiple IBM System x Service Processor (SP) technologies
- Configure and bring up a scaled, multi-node IBM System x server partition
In addition, you will be able to:
- Recognize and use server-specific support tools
- Install a NOS on selected IBM System x servers
- Understand how IBM System x servers work with the Microsoft Windows Network Operating System (NOS) and how they behave under certain failure conditions

The IBM Training Site for Web based training is at http://www.ibm.com/services/weblectures/awsp
Technicians must be authorized to access this site. If you are not authorized, IBM will need to preregister you on the Training site.
Before this can be done, you must:
- Be listed as a technician on ServiceBench
- Have a valid email address in your technician profile in ServiceBench
- Be associated with an active Location ID in ServiceBench
- Must have an IBM ID**
- **You can check to if you have a valid IBM ID by doing the following
- Go to https://www-304.ibm.com/usrsrvc/account/userservices/jsp/login.jsp?persistPage=true
- Select “Forgot your password” on the right
- Key in your IBM ID
- Continue
- If you get the security question screen, then you keyed in a valid IBM ID
- If you get an error that your IBM id cannot be found, then the IBM ID you keyed in is not a valid IBM ID
When you go to the IBM Training site, it is important to go to “Help” (select from left navigation bar) and closely follow the instructions.
If you have an existing IBM ID, you will need to do Steps 1 and 3 outlined in the Help text. If you do NOT have an existing IBM ID, you will need to do Steps 1, 2 and 3 outlined in the Help text.
IMPORTANT: EVERYONE needs to be pre-registered by IBM with an IBM ID, email address, Location ID and Authorization ID in order to access the IBM Training site – even if you do have an existing IBM ID, you still need to be pre-registered by IBM. The difference is:
- If you have an existing IBM ID, you will need to do Steps 1 and 3 outlined in the Help text AFTER you have been pre-registered. You will sign in with your IBM ID
- If you do not have an existing IBM ID, you will need to do Steps 1, 2 and 3 outlined in the Help text AFTER you have been pre-registered. You will sign in with your email address which will now be your IBM ID too.
Once you are successfully signed on, other important items to reference are:
- News and Announcements: Has information about the Learning History and any changes – this site should be checked often for any new and updated training information
- Training Overview and Roadmap: that shows the training required for servicing specific brands.
At this time the capability of printing a certificate of completion is not available, however this is being worked on and when it is available, an entry will be posted in the News and Announcements on the training site and as a News item on ServiceBench.
